OUR MISSION is to help bridge the gap between generations: Encourage all Senior Centers (during National Senior-Appreciation-Week™) to organize an Open House Week program inviting their community neighbors, including young people, to visit and participate in their programs.

Marian McQuade (1917–2008)Founder, National Grandparents Day!
A housewife in Fayette County, West Virginia, with 15 children, 40 grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.
Her primary motivation was to champion the cause of lonely elderly in nursing homes AND she hoped to persuade grandchildren to tap the wisdom and heritage their grandparents could provide.
In 1970, this West Virginia housewife, Marian Lucille Herndon McQuade, initiated a campaign to set aside a special day just for Grandparents. With the help of civic, business, church and political leaders, the campaign expanded statewide. The first Grandparents Day was proclaimed in 1973 in West Virginia by Governor Arch Moore. Also in 1973, Senator Jennings Randolph introduced a Grandparents Day resolution in the US Senate. President Jimmy Carter, proclaimed in 1978, that National Grandparents Day would be celebrated every year on the first Sunday after Labor Day. The FORGET-ME-NOT flower is the Offical Flower of National Grandparents Day!
